AN Indonesian promoter threatened today to sue the management of US hip-hop group N.E.R.D. for cancelling a show in Jakarta after they ran into trouble with the law in neighbouring Malaysia.

N.E.R.D. were due to play in the Indonesian capital on Sunday but called off the gig at the last minute over fears of similar trouble with Indonesian police, local promoters Java Festival Production said in a statement.

The trio was "depressed" by their treatment in Malaysia, where they were questioned by authorities after a performance in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

Malaysia's Bernama news agency reported yesterday that immigration department officials took statements from the group as they had not received official permission to perform there.

"We are going to file a lawsuit against N.E.R.D.'s management for their unilateral decision to cancel," Java Festival Production spokesman Rezanda Tamaputra said. He said the band only notified his office about the cancellation a few hours before they were due to go on stage on Sunday evening.  "They have to pay all the costs we incurred over this cancellation," Mr Tamaputra said.

"N.E.R.D. cancelled their show in Jakarta because the band members were afraid to come to Indonesia because of the bad experience they had in Malaysia," Java Festival said in a statement.

"N.E.R.D. were very depressed about being threatened with detention for up to two weeks. This has never happened before in the music industry...

"Shortly after the show finished all the band's passports were confiscated. This is a very bad precedent."

N.E.R.D. is a funk rock, alternative rock and alternative hip hop band formed in 2001. Their music is best described as funk rock, with various other influences, including hip hop, R&B, soul, alternative rock, and blues. Band member Pharrell Williams explains:

Somalia: Pirates go back to work.

Somali pirates seized an Egyptian cargo ship and its 28 crewmembers on Thursday while a Malaysian military helicopter saved an Indian tanker from being hijacked in the new year's first attacks by pirates in the dangerous Gulf of Aden. Fifteen armed pirates snatched the Egyptian vessel, called Blue Star, after the ship exited the Red Sea and entered the gulf, carrying a cargo of 6,000 tons of fertilizer, according to Egyptian Deputy Foreign minister, Ahmed Rizq.

The pirates then steered the ship toward the coast of Somalia, Rizq said.

He said contacts were under way with "international and regional parties" to get the ship released — which likely meant there were attempts to negotiate with the pirates.

In the other attack Thursday, a Malaysian military helicopter saved an Indian tanker carrying a full load of oil when it was attacked by two skiffs, one of which carried seven pirates dressed in military-style uniforms, said Noel Choong of the International Maritime Bureau's piracy reporting center.

Muslim Malaysia's National Fatwa Council recently issued a religious ruling that wearing trousers was un-Islamic. It said that, by wearing trousers, young girls risked becoming "tomboys" who became sexually active.

That move triggered small protests later from two non-Muslim non-government organizations -- Katagender and Food-not-Bombs. "I'm warning them and will take stern action as it involves national security," Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan told reporters on Thursday, according to the state-run Bernama news agency.
