Federal authorities say a leader of what they describe as a nationwide radical Sunni Islam group has been fatally shot during an FBI raid in the Detroit area.

The U.S. attorney's office in Detroit says Imam Luqman Ameen Abdullah refused to surrender during an FBI raid Wednesday and was killed in an exchange of gunfire.

Abdullah and 10 others were charged in a complaint with conspiracy to commit several federal crimes, including illegal possession and sale of firearms and theft from interstate shipments.

Authorities say an FBI dog also was killed during the raid.

The Detroit Free Press says that 10 have been arrested in raids in Dearborn and Detroit:

Luqman Ameen Abdullah, 53, also known as Christopher Thomas, was gunned down after refusing to surrender and opening fire when the FBI raided one of the locations, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

“The eleven defendants are members of a group that is alleged to have engaged in violent activity over a period of many years and known to be armed,” according to a joint statement from the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office.

An FBI dog was also killed during one of the raids.

Abdullah and 10 others were charged in a complaint with conspiracy to commit several federal felony crimes, including illegal possession and sale of firearms and theft from interstate shipments.

Abdullah was the leader of a group which calls itself "Ummah, a group of mostly African-American converts to Islam, which seeks to establish a separate Sharia-law governed state within the United States,” the press release states.

“The Ummah is ruled by Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rapp Brown, who is serving a state sentence… for the murder of two police officers in Georgia.”

Update:  4:35 pm MST - It looks like multiple sites were targeted.

The operation involved locations in Detroit and Dearborn.

Yellow police tape was put up outside a trucking and warehouse firm on Miller Road just north of Michigan Avenue, and a Dearborn police car was parked outside.

Another site involved in the raids was on Tireman near Interstate 96 on the city's west side.

Update:  4:45 pm MST - Looks like we're up to 11 arrests.  Or not. The Detroit Free Press headline says 11 - the article says 10.  (corrected.)

The men arrested in the raid were part of a Detroit mosque where a leader called for “an offensive jihad,” according to the criminal complaint.

Eleven Muslim men were charged in the complaint. One of them is in custody, two are at loose, and seven appeared today in U.S. District Court, said the U.S. Attorney’s office. Six of those men appeared on complaints they received or sold good stolen across interstate lines.

Luqman Abdullah “regularly preaches anti-government and anti-law enforcement rhetoric,” the complaint said.

The complaint says that Abdullah is “a highly placed leader of a nationwide radical fundamentalist Sunni group consisting primarily of African-Americans, some of whom converted to Islam while they were serving sentences in various prisons across the United States. Their primary mission is to establish a separate, sovereign Islamic state (“The Ummah”) within the borders of the United States, governed by Shariah law.”

Shadi Saad, the owner of Wellcare Pharmacy on Oakman in Dearborn, said he stepped outside before lunchtime to see several people in FBI jackets with guns going toward the warehouse across the street. He heard noises like shots and a short time later a helicopter descended.

“It was like a movie scene for a minute,” he said. He opened his business, he said, just 10 days ago. “This isn’t the way I wanted it to start.”

 Fog of war update: The Detroit Free Press is now reporting (in an update of their previous article) that 6 mosque-teers are currently in custody.  A quick glance at the criminal complaint looks like the rest are being sought by authorities.

A Detroit News photographer was attacked outside a Detroit mosque whose leader was fatally shot earlier in the day while exchanging gunfire with federal agents.

A group of men was on the porch at Masjid Al-Haqq (MAHS-jid al HAHK) when Ricardo Thomas arrived and began taking photos Wednesday evening from across the street. He says several pushed him, one threw a punch at him and his camera equipment was smashed.

Thomas was kicked while on the ground. He had a cut lip and said "there was no reason" for them to attack him. Jonathan Wolman, editor and publisher of the News, said it was outrageous that Thomas was roughed up.

As many of you may have heard, Jamil Al-Amin has been moved to what is known in prison as "the hole". He was strip searched and placed in a cell with no bed, no control over the lights and no shower. They have taken his Qur'an and all of his other personal property.  No information has been given as to why this transfer was made, but nothing could justify this inhumane treatment.

A 45-page complaint alleged that Luqman Ameen Abdullah "calls his followers to an offensive jihad," "regularly preaches anti-government and anti-law enforcement rhetoric" and preaches that every Muslim should "have a weapon and should not be scared to use their weapon when needed."

The complaint further alleged that an armed group known as the "Sutra team" protected the mosque. In January, when members were evicted from a building on Joy Road for non-payment of property taxes, Detroit police confiscated two firearms, about 40 knives and martial arts weapons from Abdullah's apartment, the complaint alleged.

Roosevelt Williams, 50, of Ojibway Correctional Facility with conspiracy to commit federal crimes, sale or receipt of stolen goods, mail fraud, supplying firearms to felons, possession of weapons by a felon, and altering or removing motor vehicle identification numbers.

One more man, A.C. Pusha, was charged in a separate complaint late Wednesday and charged with conspiracy to commit federal crimes.

Salaam, Saboor, Porter, Beard, Ibraheem, Raqib, and Pusha all appeared in U.S. District Court in Detroit late Wednesday afternoon and were held pending detention hearings Thursday. Others charged are still at large.
