"The New Zealand Embassy in Tehran and the honorary consul in Pakistan are actively pressing the Pakistan authorities to get updates on Mr Taylor's welfare," a ministry spokeswoman said. "(We want) to ensure he has access to consular assistance and to obtain permission to speak directly to him."
Asked if the situation was becoming urgent, the spokeswoman said: "That's correct, so that's why we've got our person on the ground working on that and we'll be talking to the Pakistan High Commissioner to see what else we can do.
"The honorary consul has travelled from Karachi to Islamabad where he is talking with the relevant local authorities to get an update on Mr Taylor's situation and his welfare and to get permission to speak directly to him. We're continuing to keep the next-of-kin updated and they still don't wish to make any media comment."Taylor was initially reported to have been carrying an Australian passport when he was detained but that had been discounted.
