Corrective Rape - it's all the rage in South Africa.

According to Action Aid, Cape Town support groups report about 10 corrective rape cases a week. Corrective rape is where men are raping lesbians in hopes to cure them of their sexual orientation. Most of these brutal attacks are being reported from towns like Johannesburg and Cape Town, where the rape crime is immensely high. Despite these massive reporting, victims cries for help still seem to fall on deaf ears. Statics show that 24 out of every 25 reported men walk free due to the fact that the African government does not recognize hate crimes as a crime. It is because of issues like these that Africa has turned into the rape capital of the world, where a quarter of all women are being raped by the age of 16.

This NPR report by Charlayne Hunter Gault says the numbers are even worse.

South Africans have become numb to the statistics: Tens of thousands of women are raped each year, with nearly half of the victims under the age of 18, according to studies. Many more rapes go unreported.

Don't look for much help from South Africa's new president, Jacob Zuma.  He's a proud polygamist and was already acquitted of raping a young woman because she wore a short skirt and thus, entrapped him.  Oh, and did you know a shower will protect you from AIDS?  That's what Mr. Zuma claims.  unh-huh.

The incident that has most damaged Zuma’s reputation was an accusation of rape three years ago. He was found not guilty at his trial, which appeared to be the result of a honeytrap set by political enemies, but he admitted having unprotected sex with the young woman while knowing she was HIV positive.

Feminists were outraged by Zuma’s excuse that the young woman had seemed keen to seduce him and was wearing a short skirt, as well as by his offhand assurance that he had showered after sex as an anti-Aids precaution.

Sometimes words just fail me.
