Qaddafi's son pays Mariah Carey $1 million for New Year's Eve concert

While other Muslim countries cancelled festivities out of sympathy with Gaza, Junior Qaddafi was shaking his groove thing on St. Bart's.  (Those Qaddafis sure are something, aren't they?  Party boy can be seen at right.  The hot and haraam Ms. Carey can be seen below.)

U.S. diva Mariah Carey reportedly scooped up a whooping $1 million to perform only four songs at a lavish New Year's Eve bash in the Caribbean thrown by the son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, press reports said Monday.

As several Middle East countries cancelled New Year celebrations in a show of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza under attack by Israel, Saif Gaddafi, 36, held an intimate bash on the Caribbean island of St. Barts, where Carey was vacationing with husband Nick Cannon, British tabloid The Sun reported.

The songstress was paid to sing a set of four classic tracks at the island's Nikki Beach Club where U.S. producer Timbaland and rapper Jay-Z also performed as part of the event.

"They all had a great time," a guest was quoted by the paper as saying.

Meanwhile, in the Middle East several concerts and shows were cancelled as Israel began a deadly assault on Gaza just four days before New Year's Eve.

As the death toll of just days of bombings climbed a somber mood dominated the area, events scheduled to take place in Egypt, Bahrain, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and the UAE emirate of Dubai were all cancelled or replaced with low key celebrations.

The comments are worth the price of admission.  Here's a sampler:

The report comes from AFP via al Bawaba - so I'm not really sure what the real deal is.  Especially when you read the report.  My bullshit detector went off and I haven't been able to find any US media that has picked up the story.  The only reports I can find are from foreign media. So who knows?

US President George W. Bush Monday called Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi to discuss the end of the "painful chapter" between the two countries that included the 1988 bombing of a PanAm flight over Lockerbie, Scotland, the White House said Monday. "The president called Libyan leader Colonel Kadhafi to express his satisfaction that the claims settlement agreement was fully implemented on October 31," said national security spokesman Gordon Johndroe of a 1.5-billion-dollar payment to compensate victims of terrorism.

The two leaders discussed that this agreement should help to bring a painful chapter in the history between our two countries closer to closure," he said, according to AFP.

The United States will continue to work on the bilateral relationship with Libya, with the aim of establishing a dialogue that encompasses all subjects, including human rights, reform, and the fight against terrorism," he added.

A senior State Department official told reporters on the condition of anonymity that Kadhafi's son Seif al-Islam would meet with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Washington on Tuesday. "He is here on a private visit but very often times when you have significant political figures who come to the US for a variety of different reasons, the secretary as well as others will see them," the official said.
