G20 leaders will eat "feast fit for a recession".

No champagne wishes or caviar dreams this year, possums.  They're going to eat the food of the simple people of the British High Street as prepared by the Naked Chef.  Would that be chicken curry takeaway?

British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver will cook for U.S. President Barack Obama and other world leaders when they visit London next month for the G20 summit, local media reported Monday.

Oliver and his team of apprentices will cook a meal at No. 10, Downing Street, for Obama and his wife Michelle, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah and other leaders from the G20 group of nations on the eve of the April 2 summit, reports said.

But caviar and vintage Champagne will be off the menu. He is under strict orders to prepare a feast fit for a recession.

He will choose food and ingredients which can be found on any British High Street for a "simple yet stunning" dinner, Government officials said.

On the one hand, we have the United States of America fighting for its economic life and on the other hand we have the President who didn't have time to comment on GM receiving a going concern warning or Citi breaking the buck but he had time to meet with Brad Pitt.

Then there's the bunch of star struck numbnuts in Congress swooning over Hollywood movie stars while shredding our constitution with their cramdown mortgage legislation.  Talk about living in an alternate universe.  Sheesh.

First of all, no, Brad Pitt is not short. Yes, he's handsome enough to stand out in any crowd. And, sorry, Angie wasn't with him.

From the moment he stepped into the Capitol on Thursday, sunglassed and goateed, Pitt's star power transformed congressional business-as-usual in a way any lawmaker or new president might envy.

Pitt's superpowers are such that he and President Barack Obama pulled off an improbably secret meeting on the same topic earlier in the day, White House spokesman Thomas F. Vietor confirmed.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was not immune to his charms. Praising Pitt for his work to rebuild New Orleans' hurricane-ravaged 9th Ward, she even allowed that meeting him affords her "bragging rights to my children and my grandchildren — a real treat for me as well."

And during a closed meeting earlier, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid confided to Pitt that he was envious that his lieutenant, Majority Whip Dick Durbin, got to meet soccer star Mia Hamm a day earlier, according to one person who was present and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Well, Pitt replied, he'll bring along co-parent Angelina Jolie next time to help Reid make Durbin jealous, this person said.

Later, a Durbin aide sniffed: "Durbin's already met Angelina Jolie."

These officials demanded anonymity because the meeting was private and they did not want to be caught gossiping about a movie star.

World's first refrigerated beach to be built in Dubai

The world's first refrigerated beach is to be built at a luxury hotel in Dubai so the filthy rich holidaymakers don't burn their feet on the scalding hot sand.

The revolutionary beach will sit next to the new Palazzo Versace hotel and will include a system of heat-absorbing pipes built under the sand and giant wind blowers, designed to keep tourists cool in the searing 40-50C heat.

The hotel, which is due to open late next year or early 2010, will be controlled by thermostats linked up to computers and feature a cooled swimming pool.

The fireplace police descended on the Bay Area on Wednesday.

For the first time ever, residential fires are illegal under a new law, passed in July, that bans home burning on winter season Spare the Air days.

The first such ban took effect at noon. Seventy inspectors from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District planned to spend the day and evening patrolling residential neighborhoods, looking for telltale chimney wisps.

Violators will get warnings by mail. Repeat offenders face fines of as much as $2,000.

The fireplace police say they are determined to keep law and order in the living room.

"We're serious," said district spokeswoman Kristine Roselius. "This is a major health threat. The weather conditions are such that smoke is trapped closer to the ground and anyone with respiratory problems will have a hard time breathing."

Re-education works:

Tim Regan of San Francisco said he had already gotten his education and wouldn't be spending Wednesday night burning any of the firewood he was buying at the Safeway on Market Street for $18.  "The environment has to trump comfort," Regan said. "I'm sentimental about these things. A fireplace is so romantic, the curl of the smoke rising up - it's like Norman Rockwell. But I'm willing to make a concession to the planet's health and survival."
