Rocky Mountain Jihadi: Had contact with senior al Qaeda operative.

Looks like a CIA source burned him.  And may I just say it couldn't have happened to a better guy.

An Afghan immigrant accused of plotting a terrorist attack in New York after receiving training in Pakistan was in contact with a senior al-Qaida operative, intelligence officials familiar with the investigation told the AP.

The CIA learned about Najibullah Zazi through one of its sources and alerted domestic agencies, including the FBI, intelligence officials said. The officials, who declined to offer more details on the operative, spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

The fact that intelligence officials learned of Zazi through a CIA source sheds more light on the government's claim that the charges against Zazi are part of a broader, international case and begins to explain why the investigation triggered such a large offensive from the nation's intelligence community.

It also shows the case stems from the CIA's counterterrorism efforts to track al-Qaida and not an investigation initiated in this country by someone's suspicious actions, like most other domestic terrorism cases handled by the FBI.

About Zazi?  The influences of radicalism were all around him.

If he chose to listen, Najibullah Zazi could hear the calls for violence all around him. The Afghan immigrant accused of plotting a terror attack on New York City spent his earliest years in his war-torn homeland. When Zazi was a teenager, his family shared a Queens apartment building and worshipped with an imam linked to former Afghan warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, later identified by the US as a global terrorist.

Prosecutors allege that on August 28, 2008, Zazi and others flew to Peshawar, Pakistan, a city with a strong Taliban and al Qaeda presence.

Those currently under surveillance in the United States include members of Zazi's travel group, according to one source familiar with the investigation. Another source said at least some of the travel group are back in the United States. Officials will not discuss the identity, number or location of those under surveillance.

It looks like his Aunt and Uncle have been called to testify before the NY Grand Jury still hearing evidence in the case:

Meanwhile, a grand jury in New York is hearing evidence and testimony, CNN has learned. One of those who has appeared before the grand jury is Zazi's uncle, Naqib Jaji. He told CNN at his home in Aurora, Colorado, that he and his wife Rabia Zazi were flown to New York by the federal government last week, and he had testified for several hours.
